Electrical System Troubleshooting

Maintaining Smoke Alarms.jpeg

If you’re experiencing electrical supply issues in your home, the first thing to do is check to see if the power has gone out in the general area. There may have been a scheduled blackout for grid maintenance, or there may been an issue with the supply in the area. If it’s night time, check outside to see if your neighbours still have power or check to see if the issue has been reported online.

If only your home is without power, you’ll want to check your fuse board as a circuit breaker may have tripped or a fuse may have blown. In this case, you will need to reset the power. The location of your fuse board will vary depending on your home but it’s commonly in the utility room.

On your fuse board:

  • First, press the blue RCD control switch, usually labelled as 16 on your fuse board.
  • The switch at 15 will then trip down, and it will trip down whichever fuse has failed.
  • If it’s something which Glenveagh has installed, the heat pump or the water heater, for example, please log a ticket with us as we will need to send somebody out to make sure it is safe to use.
  • If the switch for ‘Ground floor sockets’ has tripped, this means that something you have plugged into a socket on the ground floor has caused the problem, in which case, you should investigate all the sockets on the ground floor. Perhaps an appliance you have plugged in has developed a fault or there may be a socket which has overloaded from too many devices trying to draw power. When you believe you have identified the source of the problem, unplug it.
  • Back at the fuse board, turn the main switch (the big red one) off for five seconds and back on.
  • Turn the switch at 15 back on, followed by the tripped switch (for example, ‘Ground floor sockets’), and the power should come back on in the house.
  • If this doesn’t work, we suggest that you try resetting from the main switch in your meter box outside.

If this does not restore the power in your home, please log a ticket with us and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
